Attention Block Watch Members,

Surrey RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance after a shots fired and dangerous driving incident occurred throughout multiple jurisdictions last night.

On January 4, 2015 at approximately 7:50pm, Surrey RCMP received a 911 call from a citizen who advised that he had confronted a suspicious parked vehicle occupied by several people in his neighbourhood. The occupants of the parked vehicle fled the area after firing several shots at the citizen’s vehicle. The citizen made the decision to chase the suspect vehicle at a high rate of speed through Surrey towards White Rock and then onto Hwy 99 northbound before finally exiting in Delta onto River Road. While on River Road, the suspect vehicle lost control and collided with a hydro poll in the 8000 block. The citizen continued past the crash location and remained on scene awaiting police who arrived shortly afterwards. Three male suspects, who are well known to police, were taken into custody and then to hospital. Two have been cleared and returned to Surrey cell block and one remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A firearm was also located at the scene of the crash.

Surrey RCMP’s General Investigations Unit has taken conduct of the file and continues to investigate. One of the suspects, Cory Lee MYERS, 25 years old from Surrey, has a Canada Wide warrant for Failing to comply with probation as well as a local warrant for Break and Enter.

Investigators are seeking additional information from any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police. Police also stress that deciding to engage in a vehicle pursuit of any kind is not recommended.

“Despite repeated requests to stop pursing the suspect vehicle, the citizen refused to comply with our commands,” says Surrey RCMP Sergeant Paul Hayes. “When you pursue a vehicle or suspect, not only are you putting your life and the general public’s lives at risk, you risk being charged yourself and could face criminal and civil consequences. We encourage citizens who notice suspicious people or vehicles to contact the police instead of confronting people themselves.”

Surrey RCMP is also thankful to our policing partners who assisted in this file as it proceeded through several areas including the Delta Police, Deas Island Freeway Patrol, and Integrated Police Dog Services.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
