Please see the below News Release of a recent incident in Surrey. With the sunny weather arriving on us it is important we are being extra vigilant with children at all times. This story could have gone far worse as in the past we have all heard of awful stories that did not end so well.
“On 2015-06-04 at approximately 3:30 P.M., Surrey R.C.M.P. were advised by B.C. Ambulance Service that they were in route to an apartment building in the 14900 Block of 105th Ave., in Surrey, B.C., for a 4 year old Child that had fallen from a second story balcony. Surrey R.C.M.P. General Duty members attended to the location. B.C. Ambulance was already on scene treating the child. The four year old child was not displaying any signs of injury, but was transported to hospital as a precaution.
The Child had come out of the apartment through the patio door onto the balcony where he resides with his family, and climbed up onto a chair that was against the balcony railing. The child had then climbed over top of the railing, falling to the soft ground below a distance of approximately 3 metres. The child landing on the ground was witnessed by a neighbour from the same building who assisted the child back into the build and then back to his apartment.
Surrey R.C.M.P. would like to remind parents that with the warmer weather arriving, that they need to be cautious with leaving windows and patio doors open, that this offers a very inviting situation to young children, and that they need to ensure that there is no opportunity for children to be able to climb up onto open windows and decks. Young children do not understand the consequences of the injuries that could occur with these type of falls. That parents / care givers need to be constantly vigilant to insure the child’s safety.”
